Michael was born August 18, 1979, began riding at age five, and showing at age 6 under the direction of his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Elton Cates. At the age of 15, Michael became involved with the daily routine of exercising and maintaining the training horses at Elton Cates Stables. Today, he is pursuing his dream of becoming a renowned horse trainer. Although his first love is the American Saddlebred, he has successfully trained and shown Arabians and Morgans, and even spent a few years team roping aboard an American Quarter Horse.

Michael received the "Horseperson of the Year" Award from his peers in the United Professional Horseman's Association for his accomplishments as a trainer of American Saddlebred Show Horses. He is an Active member of the United Professional Horseman's Assoc. (UPHA), the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), as well as the American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA).
